I still have a copy of the t*rget team lead guide to dealing with union activity that I nicked from the office when I worked there, it’s mostly the same stuff but it also revealed just how much of their management tactics were intended to frustrate any unionizing activity. For instance, they said that cross-training in multiple departments was the best way to get reliable hours, and encouraged everyone to do it; according to the manual, however, it was their way of keeping departments mixed up and jumbled, making it impossible for any single department to unionize (and forcing anyone who wanted to unionize to get the entire store to do it).
And that’s just part what the store managers are taught. Throughout, it mentions holding off on action and consulting a labor relations officer in the company on how to proceed. Who knows what kind of shady shit the people a step above do?

They are all very familiar with the anti-union tactics of retail owners and managers, and will have some advice for you, some literature to distribute, and strategies to counter these tactics. It has historically been extremely hard for retail and fast food employees to unionize specifically because the owners and managers keep us scared, disorganized, and are happy to fire us for unionizing, labor laws be damned. Their entire business model hinges on us being overworked and underpaid. Contact a union for help organizing in your store.
Spanish newspaper El Confidencial reported that Amazon met with police officials after the strike was announced. It wanted local officers “to force employees to go to their respective jobs and ensure their performance was identical to that of a normal working day.”
Amazon’s request “dumbfounded” police, according to El Confidencial. “The request was categorically rejected by the police, who maintained that controlling labour productivity doesn’t fall within its powers,” a police source said.
Law enforcement officials reportedly emphasized to Amazon that Spanish law protects workers’ right to strike. They told the company that police would be present at the strike but would limit themselves to keeping the peace.

Yelp is crazy unethical. Even before I heard about this nonsense, I worked at a small business in San Francisco whose customer traffic was directly influenced by their cesspool of a site.
Anyway, my supervisor and I worked hard to make sure every customer was happy. And we were succeeding! We had a perfect 5 star rating on Yelp! It was amazing! Then one day we got a 1 Star Rating on our Yelp Page. Someone from Pennsylvania left a nasty review on our site. It was scathing.
Now, that’s not something that’s too far out of the realm of possibility for my job. While I sold mattresses in a brick and mortar, we also sold mattresses via Amazon and our online store and people from all over the country purchased mattresses from us. But I digress. The reason this is important is, well, where it gets dicey for Yelp. Because sure enough, Yelp sent us an email telling us that if we paid some fee they would push all the bad reviews off the site. They were extorting money out of us!
And here’s where it gets really interesting. My supervisor contacted the customer to see if there was anything we could do to make them happy with their purchase, so they can change their review. But the customer in question had literally never heard of our company and obviously never purchased anything from us.
Yelp literally committed fraud, and it was only when we threatened to sue that they took the fraudulent review off of our page.
Yelp is awful.

People always gloss over how mentally damaging it can be to work in retail. I fucking hate that whenever I say “I could never work in retail again” someone has to reply “You snowflake millennials can’t take a starter job because you have to INTERACT with other people” No. Fuck you. I’ve worked as a planetarium host. I’ve worked as a public speaker. I’ve worked as a tutor and as a student teacher. I can work with people. I can work with crowds. Retail was fucking different. Retail was being treated as a subhuman. Retail was being treated so poorly that you have anxiety attacks before work. Having to work retail was a factor in my last suicide attempt. If I hear you say one fucking word about retail workers playing the victim I will personally break every bone in your body. Fuck You.
The holidays are coming up. Retail workers are going to be spiraling into a nightmare beyond human comprehension. If you’ve worked retail, you know this. If you haven’t, be aware of it. Please be kind to every retail worker you come across. Please be patient and understanding. It is misery out there.
favorite story: apparently, while filming “black swan,” the director would try to pit mila kunis and natalie portman against each other, telling them that the other woman was doing a better job, in hopes of making their characters’ rivalry seem more authentic. but it completely backfired, since instead of getting angry or competitive, natalie and mila would just congratulate each other on doing such good work.

Darren Aronofsky. He has since directed mother! where he forced Jennifer Lawrence to reshoot a scene after she broke a rib or something. He is still really praised in cinephile circles, which is why I want to name and shame him.
And let us all admit that directors like Darren Aronofsky are not being praised DESPITE this behaviour but rather BECAUSE of it. They’re seen as edgy and willing to take risks and do what needs to be done, no matter the fallout, to get the perfect shot. They take risks for their art.
Except, of course, they don’t. They make other take risks, they push and damage other people, not themselves.
Darren Aronofsky banned bottled water on the set of “Noah”, and after a long day of filming, Emma Watson came back to her trailer so exhausted and dehydrated that she unthinkingly drank a glass of water that had been left sitting out for weeks, maybe months. The water had gotten filthy by that point, and it made her horrifically ill. When she told Aronofsky that she was sick, he refused to let her take a break from filming. He told her to “use it”.

Let’s pls end the idea that directors like this mistreating their actors are “Artists” who are “Doing it to get a better performance out of them”
No they’re just pretentious douchebags and if the only way they can make a good film is to mistreat their actors then they probably should quit and go find a different job because they are clearly shit at directing
I work in film and tv in ny and the best actor performances are the ones that are made through love and respect of the craft and the individuals involved. People work better when trusted and cared for vs yelled at, starved, alienated or mistreated.
Heyyy, friendly reminder that threatening someone via blackmail to out them as gay even if they’re not gay is still homophobia, because it’s using being gay as a type of shame and humiliation.
In other news, Sabrina episode two is not cool, and wow I really hope this gets addressed as not being okay before the episode is over.

Yeah unfortunately it never got brought up in the episode again. I get that this is supposed to be a “dark” version of Sabrina, but that was still not okay.
Also the Baphomet statue was not in this episode, but I can see why the Satanic Temple would want to sue. Because (surprise, surprise) the show is not an accurate representation of the Satanic Temple or its goals or mission at all.
